How to Become a Pilates Instructor

Pilates exercise programs have increased in popularity over the last several years. Thus, the demand for Pilates instructors has grown. To obtain professional certification in the Pilates industry, you must pass the PMA's (Pilates Method Alliance) CPT (Certified Pilates Teacher) examination. Jobs are still available in the private sector of the field for instructors without this certification; however, the criteria usually includes a form of in-house or on site training. For the purposes of this article, the discussion is directed towards the CPT examination.

1. First: The CPT examination and eligibility requirements

   PMA is a third party group who has established a set of criteria that is used to determine the standard for certification in the field of Pilates. The exam itself consists of 150 multiple choice questions. Candidates must fulfill certain eligibility requirements before they are allowed to take the exam. The eligibility requirements are either documented completion of a minimum 450 hour comprehensive Pilates teacher training program, or documented 720 hours of comprehensive Pilates employment within the last 12-months.

2. Second: Preparing for the exam

   Aside from taking Pilates lessons and classes, one good way to prepare for successful completion of the exam is to take an anatomy class for full understanding of the body, and how it works. Enroll in a Pilates teacher training program offered locally, but check that it is a program accepted by the PMA. Plan ahead, as the courses and the exam are costly. Get fully prepared before registering for the exam.
