How to Use Pilates Machines

A Pilates workout helps improve your health by increasing blood circulation, tuning you into your body, and building a stronger core. With these benefits in mind, the easiest way to get a Pilates workout is through machinery specially-designed to aid you. Here, you can learn how to properly use a common Pilates Reformer machine.

  1. First: Preparation and adjustment

Before beginning your workout, check that your Pilates Reformer equipment is properly set up. Look at the cable adjustments on the straps, as well as any other parts, such as the sliding board, to see if they are properly secured and aligned. Proceed to adjust the machine to your personal modifications; adjust the head rest, the resistance on the springs and the straps, etc.

  2. Second: Positioning

After the machine is set up properly, lie flat on your back on the machine. Take this time to get into a comfortable position, and place your feet on the foot bar, close to a 90 degree angle. Place your head on the headrest, if applicable. It is important to get comfortable before beginning a workout, so that you do not strain your muscles.

  3. Third: Repetitions

Once you are well-positioned, exhale as you stretch your legs to move the platform away from the foot bar. Then, inhale as you slowly bend your knees and the return the platform to its starter position. A full, combined motion, is a repetition. It is recommended that you do a series of repetitions in a row, with short breaks after each series. Never exercise if you feel you are over-exerting yourself.
