Pilates is a type of exercise that focuses on the core of the body to create flexibility and fluid movement. People of all ages have the opportunity for success with Pilates. Pilates involves either a specific Pilates machine, or simple apparatuses which combine with athletic movement. Wear specific types of clothing while practicing Pilates.
What not to wear
Loose or baggy shirts create some problems with Pilates. Because of the amount of moving and contorting that is done, more body may show than originally planned. Also, focus on the back of the shirt as well as the front. Shirts should not have anything like ties or other bulky features that pose a problem while lying on your back. The same applies with pants. You do not want too much extra fabric, or they can get caught in equipment and machinery during exercises. Avoiding baggy clothing allows the instructor to view the participant's body more easily, which helps him or her see if the exercises are performed accurately. Avoid wearing jewelry and perfume to Pilates. Jewelry gets in the way of different moves and causes pain. Perfume may irritate others who are taking the same class.
What to wear
Wear clothing that is form fitting, but not too tight. Most importantly, keep clothing simple. A basic t-shirt that fits nicely, paired with a pair of athletic pants does the job. Lay down and move around in the clothing before going to Pilates to see how it works.
In Pilates, comfort is important. A Pilate participant should wear clothes that allow him or her to move easily without showing off too much of the body.
