What Is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of physical fitness exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the early part of the 20th century. Sometimes referred to as Contrology, this method focuses on the idea that the mind controls the muscles. A typical Pilates routine is designed to increase the flexibility, strength, coordination and endurance of the body.
Pilates was born in Germany
Joseph Pilates believed that the mind and body are interconnected in a way that makes physical health dependent on mental health. His first generation of students were called "The Elders." This group consisted mainly of dancers located in Germany. "The Elders" eventually went on to teach this form of exercise to their own students, thus Pilates was born. Today's traditional and contemporary forms of Pilates are direct descendants of these early teachings.
The six principles of Pilates
Philip Friedman and Gail Eisen were students of Elder Romana Kryzanowska. They published the first modern Pilates book in 1980. In it, they outlined the six major principles of Pilates. These principles, concentration, control, center, flow, precision and breathing, were quickly adopted by the masses. Now part of mainstream Europe and North America, Pilates is practiced by over 11 million people worldwide.
Finding an instructor
Finding a Pilates instructor is quite easy. Many doctors, especially obstetricians can direct a patient to a competent instructor; Pilates is considered a beneficial form of exercise for pregnant women. There is no formal training required for offering Pilates instruction, so seek out recommendations from others, and find out what makes your instructor qualified to teach the discipline.
Pilates is a huge success for helping people out who seek a form of exercise that puts emphasis on the interconnection of mental health and physical fitness. Modification is also a key element in any Pilates routine. All exercises are modified for a safe workout that is still challenging for any fitness level.
